Book Publishing: Process and Fees
  1. Author contacts Canmore Press; is invited to send manuscript with suggested specifications for book, i.e. the desired appearance, dimensions, a page number estimate, number to be printed, use of illustrations, etc. Author/Artist includes good-faith, non-refundable $100 deposit for estimates to be rendered, will be credited toward layout and design fees. Assisted self-publishing authors retain full copyright to their manuscripts. Canmore Press may request copyright ownership for a few selected titles, thereby broadening publication options.
  2. Canmore Press secures estimates for best possible printing price from print and binding shops, submits estimate to author.
  3. Author accepts or declines; concrete terms between Canmore Press and the author are negotiated; author pays a nonrefundable retainer of $250 to Canmore Press to cover misc. costs (phone calls, postage, etc.)
  4. Author sends manuscript saved in rich text format as an email attachment, on computer disc or CD to Canmore Press (or author may request an editor).
  5. Canmore Press assists the author, when requested, in locating a suitable artist and facilitates negotiations when appropriate without charge to either the author or artist. It is in the best interest of the author to select an artist whose work compliments and promotes the story line. Canmore Press provides a blank Author/Artist contract suitable for modification by the author and/or artist to ensure the project can procede in good faith.
  6. For children's books, Canmore Press provides a story-board to the artist for his or her use in rendering appropriate graphics. Note: this is a rough sketch and is not the final layout or font selected. This service is included in Canmore Press's fees as described below.
  7. Canmore Press provides sample layout choices to the author and illustrator (if appropriate) for font selection, paragraph style, chapter headings, etc. Together, the author, illustrator, and Canmore Press designer select a style that comliments the manuscript. It should be noted that Canmore Press is congnizant at all times of creating beautiful books with appeal to bookbuyers. However, the assisted self-publishing author retains the right to make final selections. Canmore Press reserves the right to make all publishing decisions on Canmore Press copyrighted manuscripts.
  8. Canmore Press designers complete content layout including artwork, selected fonts, decorative chapter headings, artistic layout, etc. At this time a onetime design, layout and final copy-editing fee of approximately $20.00 per page is billed for books with 60 or more pages OR, if the author prefers, a flat hourly fee may be charged of $75/hour. Children's books (32 pages) requiring detailed coordination between graphics and text start at approximately $1000.00 for layout and design plus graphic manipulation and placement ($75.00/hour). Cover design ranges from $450.00/cover or a flat fee at $85.00/hour for simple designs.
  9. Canmore Press sends the first-draft layout to the author for his or her approval. It is not uncommon for the author to wish to make minor text changes, and he or she may do so at no additional cost. If, however, the author wishes to make extensive content corrections requiring layout changes an additional $40.00 fee/page changed will be charged.
  10. Author with retained copyright ownership pays Canmore confirmed publication costs.
  11. When final layout copy is returned (and whatever changes made), a Canmore Press Production Manager will supervise the entire project. (Note: Canmore Press quality costs approximately 1/2 - 2/3 that of hiring a self-publishing house where author assistance is not provided.)
  12. Books are shipped to author; insured UPS at author's expense. If Canmore Press is to be involved in distribution, approximately 100-500 books are warehoused for distribution to booksellers such as to amazon.com; Barnes & Noble; Baker & Taylor; etc. A nominal handling fee will be deducted from author's payment to cover costs (warehousing, bookkeeping, phone calls, boxes, envelopes, etc.) in addition to those shipping charges paid by the purchaser.
  13. Reimbursement policy to the author for books distributed by Canmore Press will be paid when accumulated sales reach $100.00 or semi-annually.
